time management for professors

As I got a permanent position I'm supposed to teach 50% of my time, and do research for 40% beginning this fall. Many of the newly appointed faculty I know aren't able to pull that off. They teach too much, or spend more time on teaching tasks than they get credit from. And when their days are full of lectures, meetings, and students dropping in, they aren't able to focus on their research. What happens is that they don't get stuff published.

So I've been asking some professors I know and respect how they cope with this. Work routines for researchers are a personal thing, so naturally, the answers vary:
